Course facts
-
The first course in Kuala Lumpur was the Royal
Selangor, built in the 1890s. For a long time
it was the city's only course but these days it
faces stiff competition. There are several golf
clubs around Kuala Lumpur called the Kelab (which
is a simple translation from the English "club")
but the Kelab Rahman Putra, a public course complex,
is one of the toughest courses in South East Asia.
-
The KRP, as locals call it, was the dream
of Malaysia's former Deputy Prime Minister, YB
En. Architect Ghafar Baba carved the
four nine-hole courses out of an oil palm plantation.
Despite a membership of 4,500, the KRP still welcomes
outsiders at extremely reasonable rates and has
hosted a number of championships over the years,
including the PGA Golf Classic in 1995.
Playing the course
Stamina:
Although the courses are by now any means flat, none
of the six course options are that hilly, but on a hot,
sticky Kuala Lumpur day, the course can be very physically
taxing. Carrying drinking water is essential, although
there are cooling points and drinks stations around
the course.
How to play:
Plenty of mature trees tightly lining the fairways and
the substantial areas of water hazard make this a real
challenge.
