Where It's At
With the largest oceanic rainforest in the Caribbean, parts
of which have never been explored, the island of Dominica
is best explored on foot, and preferably with a guide. Dominica
has unsurpassed mountain and rainforest scenery and hiking
can range from an easy walk to the Emerald Pool to
a trek to the unforgettable boiling Lake in the Morne Trois
Pitons National Park, the second largest lake of its kind
in the world. Dominica ripples with all shades of green, dramatic
sinking valleys and soaring mountains - making this the ideal
Caribbean island for adventurous trekking.
Practicalities
Dominica takes its eco-awareness very seriously and therefore
charges a nominal fee for those who wish to enter its protected
nature reserves. The price is well worth it as the money is
used to preserve the huge areas of uninhabited land, which
are such a rare commodity in the Caribbean.
Things to See
The forest is so dense that there are many layers of sound
within it. Plantain is found here and so is begonia;
a plant which tastes like sour apple and is sometimes used
as cold medicine. There are beautiful waterfalls here, too,
for example the cascading Middleham Falls.
